Healthy Vegan Burger Ingredients
The ingredients for this burger are super simple, nothing complicated. And best of all, you will likely have all of these already in your pantry! If not, here’s what to add yo your grocery list:
- Black beans: either canned or dried. If you are using dried beans, you will need to soak them the night before and cook them before you can start making the burgers.
- Rolled oats: this will give the burgers some more texture, and fiber
- Onion: either white or red, depending on the flavour you like.
- Soy sauce: this will give it a lovely umami flavour, just make sure to get a low-salt one.
- Dried herbs & spices: such as oregano, basil, garlic and smoked paprika.
How to Make Vegan Burgers
Let me give you a brief overview of the steps. You can find the full step-by-step recipe below:
- Pulse the onion into smaller bits in the food processor.
- Add all the other ingredients to the food processor and pulse a couple of times.
- Press the burgers into shape using the burger press.
- Bake them off in a preheated oven.
What Makes Vegan Burgers Stick Together?
For this recipe, it’s the combination of the moisture and texture of the black beans, onions, oats and soy sauce that makes it stick together. Pressing the burgers firmly using a burger press also makes them stick together really well. A burger press is also so quick to use! You can buy a burger press online quite cheaply. I found mine at the Lidl a couple of years ago. Best 7 Euros I ever spent!
Best Toppings for Vegan Burgers
You are the one that decides which toppings are the best! Feel free to get creative with them. I love adding fresh lettuce, cucumbers or pickles, avocado, bean sprouts, and juicy tomatoes. These add a great crunch and additional nutrients to your meal. This makes the healthy vegan burger!
Can You Freeze Plant-Based Burgers?
Yes, they are super easy to freeze! Just make sure that when you stack the burgers on top of each other, you add piece of baking paper to prevent them from sticking to each other. It’s better to freeze them unbaked, because if you reheat already cooked burgers, they will get a bit dry. And nobody likes a dry burger!
